• Brush cleaning // Dr Bronner's Liquid Soap // review and demo •

The Saturday chore of brush cleaning has been made significantly easier due to a certain rather famous product. The much hyped, much talked about soap induced raised expectations from myself as it's all over the internet - bloggers and vloggers, it seems, can't get enough. So when my Dr Bronner's Magic Castile Liquid Soap in Peppermint arrived, I was excited to see what all the fuss was about. (The price ranges from £5.49 to £12.49 from feelunique, click here to be directed to the site).

Demo:
I start by wetting the palm of my hand with cool water.
I then drop half a pea-sized amount of the soap into my wet hand.
I hold the brush under the cold tap, being careful not to get the handle wet.
Swirl the brush into the wet soapy palm of your hand.
Rinse your brush under the cold tap, rinse your hand off and repeat the process until the water runs clear.
Reshape your brush while it's still wet.
And place it on the edge of a hard surface, ensuring the brushes are sloping downwards so that none of the water can seep into the brush handle.
Review:
First off, this magic soap is organic, does not test on animals, is certified Fair Trade and the bottles are made from recycled plastic. If this soap was a person, I would just hug them. So many companies need to take a leaf out of Dr Bronner's book - if he can do it, why can't they?!
Now more about the soap itself. It boasts 18 uses, a few of my favourites being brush cleaning (obviously), using it as shampoo or shower gel, shaving cream, washing dishes and clearing congestion (one tablespoon of the soap into a bowl of steaming water, place a towel over your head and inhale - job's a goodun').
I particularly like the peppermint scent as, to me, it feels more "clean". It's probably a psychological thing - in fact I know it's a psychological thing, as they're all soaps and all just as clean as eachother. But there's just something about peppermint that screams "clean" to me. The scent is really strong and will knock your socks off if you shower with it in the morning - great for when you're feeling like you're unable to face the day/haven't had enough sleep.
In the past, to clean my brushes I've tried the MAC brush cleanser, Johnson's baby shampoo, regular shampoo and even my regular face wash. I can definitely say that none of them work nearly half as well as Dr Bronner's Castile Liquid Soap. The process of brushing is just made so much easier as the soap lathers so well in your hands. And the fact that you only need the teeniest bit makes me love it even more - this 236ml bottle will last me for ages, I can tell. I've washed kabuki brushes, buffing brushes, eyeshadow brushes, eyeliner brushes, my beauty blender and all sorts of other brushes with it, and the magic works on all of them.

So there you have it. If you want to half your brush cleaning time, I strongly suggest you pick this little guy up. I really can't find any faults with it and have recommended it to so many people - needless to say, it's a staple product for them too. The Saturday chore doesn't seem as much of a bore for me now!

  4. I've not heard of this liquid soap before but it sounds great - can't believe the amount of things you can use it for - definitely worth the money! I just use baby shampoo to clean my brushes which is pretty effective apart from when it comes to my darn beauty blender!! Seems nothing can fully get everything out of it so think I need to look into this! xx

  7. I'm so glad I found your blog - following you now!
Cleaning your brushes is such a good habit but I always procrastinate doing it! I need to get my act together, haha!
I usually use shampoo and conditioner to clean my brushes then leave them soft, whereas my grandmother uses soap and then a little bit of Lenor fabric softener! But I'd definitely give this a try :)
    Keep in touch!

Honestly this method really cuts down the cleaning time - it takes me no time at all. I used to put off washing my brushes so bad until I found this soap, it's amazing! I've never heard of the Lenor method but I bet her brushes smell so good when they've been washed! Thanks for stopping by, Daniela x
